5 side events to look out for at Dataharvest 2025

We look forward to welcoming you to Dataharvest in a few days time! As the conference week arrives, perhaps you’ve already looked at the schedule and seen just how many journalism sessions are on offer. But conferences shouldn’t only be hard work.

That’s why we’ve planned several side events, to give a few more ways of engaging with the Dataharvest community. After the last session on Friday afternoon, you have a choice of 5 activities.

Here is a list: click on the links below to go to the programme, and find out more about each event. (NB: Please note that some activities require signing up in advance in order to attend!)

  1. A walking tour of historical Mechelen

Did you know that Mechelen played an important political and economic role in the 15th century, when the city was under the rule of the Dukes of Burgundy? Many historical buildings testify to this: St. Rumbold’s Cathedral, the former palaces of Margaret of Austria and Margaret of York, the Palace of the Grand Council, etc. etc. The Historical City Walk now also takes in the newly discovered 14th century wall paintings in St. John’s Church. Follow your guide through historical Mechelen.

Where: Schepenhuis – Grote Markt, Vleeshouwersstraat 6

When: 18:30

Do I need to sign up? Yes [SOLD OUT]

  1. A walking tour about women in Mechelen

This walk looks at the power of women and their influence on the city, from the highest ranks to the lowest, from the distant past through to the present day. Among other things, you will visit Margaret of Austria’s palace and what is now the law courts. You will also be able to view the exterior of Margaret of York’s palace, now the home of the municipal theatre.

When: 18:30

Do I need to sign up? Yes [max 25, a few spots left!]

  1. An OSINT challenge to test your research skills with colleagues

The OSINT challenge gives Dataharvesters the chance to have some fun, test their OSINT skills and lateral thinking, and get some fresh air on the streets of Mechelen. Either come as a team (3 is a good number) or find other team members at the beginning of the session. Marcus Lindemann and Jonathan Stoneman will kick off the quest! And there is a prize for the winners…

When: 18:30

Do I need to sign up? You can sign up, but you can also just turn up at 18:30

  1. Live journalism on stage can you turn an investigation into theatre?

Have you ever experienced journalism being presented to a live audience? There’s a growing community of practitioners across Europe doing just that. This year, Dataharvest will showcase a Live Journalism production featuring a cross-border investigation done by journalists from the Dataharvest community, organised with Christine Liehr of Headliner. Come to enjoy the experience and to get a glimpse of how you too could organise a Live Journalism show back in your city!

Drinks and light snacks will be served in the lobby area during the performance.

When: 18:30

Do I need to sign up? No

  1. Nerd Jam: a meet-up for coders and techies

The Nerd Jam is all about showing each other software projects, exploratory scripts or interesting use cases for established tools. It’s a session to learn and be inspired by others who use code to wrangle data and support their work. Alex Ștefănescu and Klil Eden will be leading the session.
