We are looking for a coordinator with a passion for independent media to join the two-person team managing the running and development of the Reference Circle, a network of 26 European independent public interest media.
Reference’s goal is to develop the independent media sector in Europe and provide a space to exchange knowledge on non-editorial, managerial, and organisational challenges, and to advocate for the well-being and sustainability of independent, public interest media. The network is hosted by Arena for Journalism in Europe.
The two coordinators work in close collaboration with the Reference membership to implement activities such as network meetings, knowledge-sharing, and self-organised initiatives. The coordinators work together but have different responsibilities: this position has an emphasis on project and operational management, the other on knowledge exchange and communication. The coordinators are part of the Arena team and receive strategic and operational support from colleagues in Arena.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has relevant experience supporting and developing networks.
- Has strong project coordination and management skills, including financial management.
- Has experience with public interest media and knowledge of the media landscape in Europe.
- Has experience with grant management, experience with EU grants an added value.
- Has a proven collaborative mind-set, while also able to handle tasks independently and reliably.
- Has an excellent level of written and spoken English.
- Is based in Europe.
Your responsibilities will be:
- Network development, e.g. coordinate the processes for governance and decision-making development.
- Participate in strategic development of the network and feed into fundraising activities.
- Manage member relations such as administration of membership categories and fees, reply to queries, etc.
- Organise and host two online and two in-person membership meetings annually.
- Support member-led activities and initiatives such as working groups.
- Support the Arena finance manager in financial management including budgeting, monitoring spending, financial reporting.
- Grant management including reporting and documenting results.
- Keep overview of project timelines and ensure that deadlines are met.
- Project management of the EU-funded Journalism Value Project, including lead on project and financial monitoring, funder reporting, and support project activities such as podcast interviews, study visits, and event organisation.

Arena for Journalism in Europe supports cross-border and collaborative journalism and has hosted the Reference Circle since its beginning with support for strategic, operational, and financial management.
Arena is founded on the belief that collaborative journalism is crucial to knowledge sharing, critical thinking, and political life in European societies. We build European networks, create cross-border meeting spaces, and spread the tools and experiences of collaborative projects.
Arena is based in the Netherlands, but team members work remotely from across Europe. We meet several times a year, collaborate and look out for each other within the team. Our working language is English.
Conditions
The job is a 60 per cent part-time position with flexible and remote working conditions. We offer a contract on a freelance basis until December 31, 2024, with the intention of an extension. We expect approximately 20 travel days per year. The remuneration level is €64-68k annually FTE, depending on experience.
