Help support independent journalism in Europe at a time when it is more needed than ever!
Arena for Journalism in Europe provides essential infrastructure to support collaborative, investigative, and data journalism across the continent. We are looking for a skilled fundraiser to help identify and secure new funding opportunities so we can support independent journalism to thrive despite the challenges it currently faces.
Arena benefits from having strong relationships with a range of private foundations and we take an active role in guarding the funding ecosystem, but as the funding context is changing, we need to develop with it – proactively.
In this role, you will be part of a small fundraising team consisting of the Director, the Development Director, and editorial colleagues to develop proposals, manage grants, and maintaining funder relationships. There’s some flexibility to the role based on the profile of the right candidate.
It is not a requirement that you are familiar with the independent journalism and media sector, but it is key that you are aligned with Arena’s purpose and curious to learn.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has substantial experience with nonprofit fundraising in democracy, social justice, human rights, ethical tech, freedom of expression, journalism, or related fields.
- Has experience building strong relationships with private philanthropy foundations and/or affluent individuals.
- Is a skilled and creative communicator, able to clearly explain projects rooted in journalism practice to funders.
- Is organised and structured, with experience coordinating workflows or projects.
- Has experience with grant management, reporting, and impact measurement.
- It is an added benefit if you have an understanding of current funding trends in Europe related to journalism, freedom of expression, democracy, open source technology, professional training, and the thematic areas that Arena works in (climate, labour, food & water, pollution).
Your responsibilities will be:
- Develop pitching material and writing compelling proposals,
- Background research of funding opportunities, keeping overview of forthcoming calls,
- Grant management, e.g. report writing, keeping track of deadlines,
- Help maintain strong relationships with funders and develop funder engagement,
- Help organise and prepare funder gatherings (in-person and online).
