The mailing list for the European Network of Independent Journalism Organisations was set up after expression of interest during the Dataharvest Digital 2020 conference to launch a European network of independent journalism organisations. The list was jointly set up by Arena for Journalism in Europe and Netzwerk Recherche.
As a development of this collaboration, Arena in November 2021 initiated Reference – the European Independent Media Circle, a membership organisation for independent publishing outlets across Europe, focusing on non-editorial matters.
In May 2022, Netzwerk Recherche published the report “The New Sector”. For the first time, Netzwerk Recherche’s report maps and outlines Europe’s emerging innovative media scene and takes a closer look at how The New Sector – as we like to call it – reclaims journalistic terrain that has (at least partly) been neglected by traditional media in the past.
From now on, Netzwerk Recherche will administrate this mailing list while Arena steps in the background. The list will operate under the name “The New Sector” in the future and will be hosted on the Arena server for the time being.
